And he was named 1987 Horse of the Year after a dramatic victory in the Breeders' Cup. When he retired from racing to stand at stud in 1989, Ferdinand had earned $3,777,983. This made him the fifth-leading money winner of all time. His was the last Derby win for famous 4'1l" jockey Bill Shoemaker. Yet despite the fame and the purses he earned, Ferdinand apparently met a horrific end. After his offspring proved less than illustrious on the track, he was sold in 1994 to Japan's JS Company. Although initially popular with local breeders, he spent six seasons at Arrow Stud on the northern island of Hokkaido and was bred to just 10 mares during his last year there before the owners decided to get rid of him. Ferdinand was placed with a horse dealer named Yoshikazu Watanabe and left Arrow on February 3, 2001. The Arrow owners made no attempt to contact the Howard Keck family who had owned and bred him in Kentucky. When a Keck family member inquired about having the horse returned to the United States, a reporter contacted Watanabe in 2003 to find out where Ferdinand was. She was initially told he had been given to a friend. When she asked to see him, she was finally advised he as been "disposed of" late the prior year. In Japan, this indicates a horse has been sent to a slaughter mill. The reporter also learned Ferdinand's registration in Japan was cancelled on September 1, 2002. In April of this year, a granddaughter of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew gave birth just outside the slaughter floor. Both mother and foal were rescued. Few people realize how many horses are slaughtered in the United States each year and why. In 2005, almost 100,000 horses were killed in this country for human consumption overseas. Nearly 20,000 were shipped live to Canada, Mexico, and Japan for slaughter. The primary markets are France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan, where horsemeat is considered a delicacy. Horse rescuers insist that the method of transporting horses to the slaughter plants is inhumane. The animals are often trucked 36 hours or longer without any rest, food, or water. Killer buyers, known as KBs, bid on the horses at auction, then sell them to a slaughter plant. While in the crowded trailers taking them to slaughter, most horses cannot even lift their heads. Many fall and sometimes arrive either crippled of dead. Many are pregnant. Their method of execution is gruesome. Sadly, many owners who sell or give away their horses have absolutely no idea that the animal could end up in a slaughter plant. And it's a misconception that those who arrive for slaughter are primarily the old, sick, disabled, or ill-tempered. Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 263-146 to pass the American Horse Slaughter Protection Act. However, the Senate did not act on this legislation before adjourning for the year. The bill, reintroduced in 2007 as HR503 in the House and S311 in the Senate, must pass a full vote in both houses of Congress. For it to become law, the President must then sign it. HR503 is not eligible for a full vote in the House until it's released by the appropriate committee. S311 currently has 27 co-sponsors. It cannot be released to the floor for vote until it has 60. Since its language is identical to that of HR503, if the Senate passes it before the House acts, the House could pass the Senate bill instead. One of the greatest frustrations for advocates of the American Horse Slaughter Protection Act is the number of Senators who sponsored the bill in 2006 but who have not stepped up to co-sponsor it this year. Spearheading the effort to get this legislation passed is a group known as the Friends of Barbaro (FOBs). They are pushing, day and night, to get these bills out of committee in honor of the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who lost his life to laminitis on January 29, 2007. They congregate at www.timwoolleyracin g.com to coordinate massive and effective call and email efforts to elected officials and to raise funds to rescue horses by outbidding the killer buyers. Since Barbaro was injured in the 2006 Preakness, they have raised more than $300,000 to end horse slaughter in the United States and make racetracks safer. And they have saved more than 600 horses, typically by dipping into their own pockets. Until recently, three slaughter mills operated in the United States. Two in Texas are currently closed. The remaining plant, Cavel in Illinois, has recently stepped up its slaughter volume in anticipation of a state law banning slaughter. The legislation was passed by May 16, and the Governor of Illinois is expected to sign it shortly. While a Texas law currently bans slaughter in that state, pro-slaughter advocates tried earlier this year to get an amendment that would have allowed the two plants to reopen. Their efforts have thus far failed. However, without Federal legislation in place, plants could open in other states where horse slaughter for human consumption is not currently illegal. In the meantime, the battle for a vote in the House and the Senate continues. Paul, a Virginia FOB who does own or ride a horse, has joined the state call team. "It's the least we can do," he explained. "These animals cannot speak for themselves. It's up to us to speak for them."
