Email from Cong. Paul Kanjorski

Dear Friend,

Even as we work to strengthen our struggling economy, the Congress is now in the process of trying to rebuild our financial regulatory structure to better protect consumers and investors.

There are many theories about what factors contributed to the historic collapse of our economy last fall, but two factors are beyond dispute: individuals and organizations borrowed too much money, and regulators failed to prevent this untenable accumulation of debt. Now we are faced with the task of crafting legislation that preserves the freedom and innovative spirit that has built the United States into the most powerful economic engine in history, while preventing the excesses which threatened to destroy the entire system. From my position as a senior member of the Financial Services Committee, I am committed to doing just that.

Good legislation requires input from many people with different perspectives and ideologies. I have reached out to work with my Republican colleagues. In addition to our many formal committee hearings, we have held a series of six meetings over the last several months during which we meet informally with leading economic thinkers to help us understand what happened and why and to make recommendations for legislation to prevent a similar situation from occurring again. Among others, guest speakers have included Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, and former Federal Reserve Chairman and current Chairman of the newly formed Economic Recovery Advisory Board under the President, Paul Volcker.

On Monday, July 13, I appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box for two hours. Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ), the top Republican for the subcommittee I chair, joined me in a discussion on how we can work in a bipartisan manner to solve these difficult policy questions for the good of the country.

The United States faces many enormous challenges, and Americans have widely differing approaches about how best to face them. However, I believe that when we listen to and learn from one another, we can develop better policies that better serve the interests of all of us.

Sincerely,

Paul E. Kanjorski
Member of Congress
