Illinois Legislative Update

Last week proslaughter State Rep Bob Pritchard and Senator Brad Burzynski (who both represent the district where Cavel is located), introduced legislation that would make it easier and less costly for Cavel to import horses to slaughter for animal feed.

We feel that Cavel as no real interest or market to sell horsemeat for animal feed and that the bills are possibly just a vehicle to use toward their real agenda…getting back into business.

We have been aware of this since the bills were introduced and have our lobbyists working to defeat the bills as we speak. The House bill is HB 4102 and its Senate companion is SB 1844. Both bills are currently in the Rules Committee, where we believe they will die an early death. It is highly unlikely either of these bills will even be assigned a committee hearing, particularly since the legislative session is set to conclude on May 31st.

The Illinois General Assembly just voted overwhelmingly to end horse slaughter and this is just another underhanded attempt to protect an industry unwelcome in Illinois and the US. Both Senator Cullerton and Rep Molaro are unconcerned about the bills and so for now, we do NOT need anyone to contact Illinois legislators.

Should the need for calls/letters arise, I will post an alert, however, there is no need for action at this time.

Stay tuned for updates, on the dirty Cavel doings in Illinois.
