Barone: Rising Speculation About Bombing Iran’s Nukes

Many years ago, I was privileged to attend a dinner with James Rowe, one of the “passion for anonymity” young aides to Franklin Roosevelt, original author of the winning strategy for Harry Truman’s 1948 campaign and close confidante of then-President Lyndon Johnson.

Rowe described how Johnson tested insider opinion. He would call an ideologically wide range of acquaintances and ask their views on an issue of the day. Most responded as he expected. But when one or two said something he hadn’t expected, he would take notice. Maybe things weren’t going as he thought.

A New York City councilman has proposed a ban on smoking in cars carrying children. They're not going to stop once they get into your car, folks. The next step will be inside your house. It's already happening in certain places, even though there is evidence, suppressed by the World Health Organization, that secondhand smoke is harmless! People will get the day off to get it on. Vladimir Putin is trying to restore the power of the Russian Empire, but he needs a population to clamp down on. (Rush 24/7 Members: Listen Here). A huge See, I Told You So! Rush noted recently that the media was warning the Democrats to get off the one-note surrender tune they've been playing on Iraq. Because the surge is going so well, in September General Petraeus could recommend that we start to reduce troop levels in some places. Word out today indicates that Petraeus will say just that, leaving the Democrats in a precarious position. Mrs. Clinton is running a ridiculous new TV ad in Iowa. It attacks the president on health care and the war, saying that average Americans and our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are "invisible" to this president. What better occasion to run the audio of President Bush honoring Hillary Clinton at the White House at the unveiling of her official First Lady portrait in 2004. The A-B, side-by-side comparison is telling. George W. Bush is a classy human being who puts the country and the office of the presidency above politics. Mrs. Clinton is...well, Mrs. Clinton.
