Liberty Counsel

Our thoughts and our prayers go out to all the
victims of the Tucson, Arizona, shooting as
well as their family and friends. This is a
national tragedy that calls for a period of
mourning and deep reflection.  Above all,
this horrendous event must not be exploited
for political gain, as some have already
attempted.  See my message below – Mat.

Willard,

It has been correctly observed that the horrendous attack
on Representative Gabrielle Giffords was an assault on
every American citizen.

Of course, Liberty Counsel strongly and
unconditionally condemns such violence.  It
is totally incompatible with our Christian
values, the proper conduct of public discourse,
and our system of government.

We call on each of our friends and supporters to join us
in sustained prayer for Representative Giffords’ early
and complete recovery, the families and friends of
those who lost their lives in this senseless attack,
and the quick recovery of all who were injured, both
physically and emotionally.

And in the highest calling of Christian forgiveness, we
ask you to join us in prayer for the captured suspect in
this crime, his family, and those who only now realize
they failed to get him the psychiatric and spiritual
help he so obviously required.

++Judge John M. Roll, a tragic loss to our nation’s
judiciary.

Every one of the people who lost their life to the
madman’s bullets is a terrible loss to their loved
ones and to our society in general.  Each of their
stories is compelling and serves to underscore the
great value of human life and its sanctity to the
loving God Who grants it.

But one of the under-reported aspects of the tragedy is
that one of the victims, Judge John M. Roll, was one of
the nation’s leading jurists.  In fact, he achieved the
singular distinction of being named the Chief Judge of
the District of Arizona from 2006 until his untimely death.

Judge John Roll had recently accepted an invitation from
Liberty University School of Law to serve as a judge for
the law school’s annual Moot Court Competition coming up
in March.

Judge Roll would have joined other accomplished jurists
in our Supreme Courtroom, an exact dimensional replica
of the United States Supreme Court in Washington, DC, to
help our law students receive one of the crowning
experiences of their study of law, and, indeed, their
lives.

Liberty University School of Law and I were honored and
humbled by the fact that a judge of John Roll’s
distinction chose to accept our invitation to
participate in the school’s Moot Court program this
year.  As United States Supreme Court Chief Justice
John Roberts’ statement about this tragedy noted, a
judge of John Roll’s order is both precious and
irreplaceable.

++Sadly, some have turned this tragedy into a national
travesty.

Within minutes of the report of the attempted assassination
hitting the newswires, some agenda-driven commentators were
already politicizing the tragedy by attempting to spin
details which, at that time, were far too scarce to reach
ANY conclusion.

Elements of the political Left were quick to begin a “blame
game” that characterized the alleged gunman as a right-wing
political operative influenced by “vitriolic language” used
by conservatives in our country’s sometimes heated political
climate.

These baseless allegations were significantly fueled by
personal assessments made by Pima County Sheriff Clarence
Dupnik, an outspoken liberal Democrat, in comments he
later admitted were not based on the facts of the case.

The blame included pointing fingers at
conservative commentators, politicians, and
the Tea Party movement, which was seized upon
and exploited as “newsworthy” by the mainstream
media.

As more details have emerged, we now know that the suspect
is likely an occultist and a disenfranchised, deranged
young man who had his demented sights set on attacking
Representative Giffords long before the emergence of the
Tea Party, who himself was a registered Independent and
had not voted in recent elections.

As columnist and psychologist Charles Krauthammer later
observed, the alleged perpetrator of this bloodbath is
possessed of a psychotic mind and is incapable of ordered
thought that could be influenced by political commentary,
if there was even any reason to believe he had been exposed
to heated political rhetoric in the first place.

Politicizing this tragedy is despicable, and
should not be tolerated by any thinking American!
Those who insist on making such outlandish
statements have only humiliated themselves
and exposed their own pathetic biases.

Willard, I am writing to you today to ask for your
prayers and to remind you and the entire Liberty Counsel
team to carefully consider the source of “news” when this
irrational type of anti-conservative rant is being published.

++Vote on ObamaCare and other legislative actions suspended.

As you probably know, the House of Representatives has
postponed all voting this week and Members are scheduled
to be off on Thursday and Friday.

For those who have already scheduled your faxes
to Congress in support of the House repeal of
ObamaCare, we will hold those faxes until
congressional activity resumes.  We will
notify you when the time is right to resume
our principled fight to repeal the ObamaCare
healthcare “reform” bill.

Thank you for your continuing prayer for Tucson’s many
victims, including those in governmental authority who
have doubtless been shaken by these events (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

God bless you,

Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman
