Dear Mr. Masters,

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about Federal Communication Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler’s net neutrality proposal that would allow service providers to charge companies for faster content. On May 15, 2014, the FCC voted to approve Chairman Wheeler’s proposal but the FCC has not indicated when the final rule will be issued.

I believe one of the biggest contributors to the Internet’s success is the ability for anyone to use it to offer any product, service, or type of information.  On May 14, 2014, my colleagues and I sent a letter to Chairman Wheeler urging him to adopt and enforce strong net neutrality rules. During the 113th Congress, I cosponsored the Open Internet Preservation Act, H.R. 3982. This legislation would roll back a recent D.C. Circuit court decision against the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) that will allow service providers to potentially block or slow down certain content. H.R. 3982 would help restore net neutrality. Additionally, on February 3, 2015, I sent another letter with 29 of my colleagues urging Chairman Wheeler to adopt strong net neutrality rules in order to preserve access to an open Internet for poor communities throughout the United States.

In the 114th Congress, I will continue to look for opportunities and support legislation that ensures that the Internet remains vital and open.

Thanks again for contacting me. I invite you to keep up with the latest votes, legislation, and work from our office on Facebook where we provide daily updates. You can also get more information on the web.

Sincerely,

Beto O’Rourke

Member of Congress
