Written Essay Required for Handgun License | Total Conservative

In Lowell, Massachusetts, conservatives, libertarians, and gun owners are lashing out at a new law that will require residents to write an essay if they want to procure a license to carry. The laws, which were voted on unanimously by the city council, are set to go into effect this week. They will put Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor in charge of determining who will and will not be granted a license.“It is absurd that people should have to write an essay to the town to explain why they should be able to exercise their constitutional rights,” said Jim Wallace, executive director of Gun Owners Action League of Massachusetts. “We already have a very strict set of gun laws in the state, but this is way over the top.”Police chiefs in Massachusetts enjoy wide latitude when it comes to implementing state and federal gun laws. Lowell’s new restrictions, however, may cross the line into infringement. At least, that’s what many residents believe. One such resident told the city council last week that we wasn’t going to play along with their games. “I will never write an essay to get my rights as an American citizen,” said Dan Gannon.
