CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS

Posted by highlysuspect on January 4, 2007 in politics, Will's articles |

I recently had a conversation with my managering editor “Short Bus”, concerning my editorial about Newt Gingrich. Mr Gingrich had given a speech about terrorists and leaders of foreign nations hiding behind the right to freedom of speech guaranteed all Americans by the Constitution. He believes America can not allow this. I agree with him from the stand point that our constitution is there to protect AMERICAN citizens, not The nut case that runs Iran or North Korea, you get the point. Apparently, during the speech Mr Gingrich said something to the effect of Americans should be willing to relinquish some of their rights in order to fight terrorism. Including some aspects of our “FREEDOM OF SPEECH”. If this is the case, and unfortunaely I did not hear the speech, I read the summary in Mr. Gingrich’s column, He is DEAD WRONG! The minute Americans relinquish their constitutional rights, the TERRORISTS win! The point of the 9/11 attacks was to destroy the American way of life. If we surrender our rights they win! In the neighborhood of 3000 people died in those attacks. Since then over 3000 people have died in Iraq and Aphganistan. 6000 plus have died!. If we do what Newt Gingrich suggests, those people will have died in vain! This country has a policy of not negotiating with terrorists, we should have a policy of not surrendering to them as well. Perhaps Mr. Gingrich should think about that.

If we give up our right to free speech what will be next.
Do we give up the right of free will.
People come here to hide behind our constitution where as we are punished for trying to protect it.
When a member of the press writes somthing out of contents he or she is strongly advised to retract what they have written, So do we have total freedom of speech?

What about when a member of the press outright lies when presenting a story. Should that be covered under freedom of speech? or even freedom of the press? Lies are what destroy peoples lives. (among other things), should the media be allowed to lie when presenting a story? Should a prosecutor be allowed to lie when trying a case? I don’t believe these should be included under freedom of speech.

This is an interesting topic, what do you think?

lies in general are simply immoral however they are not illeagle.
should the press lie to get a better story no should laywers lie to win a case no but all these things happen.
I too don’t thing lies should be included under freedom of speech.
but lets face it in the political world if it was not for lies the politicians wuld have nothing to say.
I personally believe that under the freedom of speech should be the right to choose your words not be told how to address issues ,what to think or say in public even if it may offend others.
