THE LEGALIZATION of MARIJUANA

Posted by highlysuspect on January 22, 2007 in politics, Will's articles |

Over the last few months there has been an increase in the support for the legalization of marijuana. The marijuana industry nets in the neighborhood of 300 million dollars a year. There are roughly three states that produse more cannibus plants than corn, wheat or any other agricultural product.

The argument for legalization is simply this: TAXES. What else would motivate a public servant (politician) to suggest something like this. How much money would the federal government make if it taxed the legal sale of marijuana? MILLIONS! Theoretically. How many adults that currently use marijuana illegally would use it if it were legally grown and sold and regulated by the government? I believe the number of users would decrease. Here is my argument. People tend to smoke pot based on the fact that it is ILLEGAL. They go to a dark alley, street or whatever and buy it from some shady looking character they’re afraid of. They do it because it has an element of danger to it. If you take away the danger, you take away the appeal. If there is no appeal, there is no revenue! Add to it the fact of the government making a profit from it, usage will decrease because Americans give enough of their hard earned dollars to the government!

Opponents of legalization give us this argument, Legalization of Marijuana would make it impossible to keep it out of the hands of our children. The last time I checked, kids didn’t have a problem obtaining it! I went to high school for 4 years, these people are telling me we couldn’t get pot! They are out of their collective minds! Their argument is stupid! Kids today, are just as resourceful as kids 25 years ago. They will always be able to get drugs, legal or illegal!

Legalization would make it less available, there would be age limits and I’m sure stiff penalties for those who sell to kids. However, there is still no way to stop it being sold to kids. There will always be someone willing to take the risk and the money.

For once I have to otally disagree with you.
I do not think people smoke pot because it’s illegal I believe they do because it relaxes them or makes them feel good.
if they made it legal there would always be some new drug to take it’s place on the street .
and yes kids will always be able to get these drugs.
goverment can not control that .
That is up to the parents to set good exapmles and morals for their children…
